Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance holds similar qualities to health insurance in that they offer access to a broad array of discounts on services in exchange for a monthly premium. The main difference to know is that dental insurance is mainly focused on prevention, rather than fixing problems that have already developed. In a sense, it’s designed to help patients stay proactive. The sooner you can take care of small problems before they turn bigger, the cheaper your care becomes.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

While every dental insurance plan can have different stipulations, most follow the same basic benefit structure regardless of the provider, which is the following:

  • Preventive Care – Usually includes checkups, cleanings, and X-rays. Covered between 80% and 100% in most cases.
  • Restorative Care – Usually includes fillings, crowns, extractions, and pulp therapy. Typically covered between 45% and 75%.
  • Cosmetic Services – Services that only address esthetics are NOT covered because they are not medically necessary.

The easiest way to get the most out of your plan is to stay committed to bringing your child in for two checkups and cleanings each year. Dental insurance will mostly cover these appointments while simultaneously reducing the chances your child will need more advanced procedures later in life. Children in higher-risk groups or with special needs may exceed benefit limits, which is where our Wellness Program can make a difference. This option is a great way to supplement coverage for your dental insurance.
